"Refuse to Be a Victim" of Crime: Chinese Community Center to Host Safety Seminar on 9/6
On June 25, 2023, Holam Cheng was shot four times by robbers in the parking lot of his Chinatown apartment complex, leaving the father of three painfully hospitalized.
In the aftermath, the Chinese Community Center and Chinese Civic Center both hosted public safety town halls to hear from police officers, elected officials, and community members, including Mr. Cheng's wife, who spoke at the July 8 meeting. Many speakers shared one concern: how to keep similar crimes from happening in Chinatown again.
You can do your part by watching out for yourself and your loved ones. Although it's impossible to guarantee that you won't become a victim of crime, there are steps you can take to make it less likely.
That's why the Chinese Community Center is hosting a safety seminar on Wednesday, September 6, in conjunction with the Southwest Management District, HPD, District Attorney Kim Ogg, and the City of Houston.
Max Li of Insider Training, a certified pistol and safety instructor, will teach how to "Refuse to Be a Victim." Sessions on the agenda include Mental Preparedness, Physical Safety in Public Places, and Home Security.
Even though it's advertised as the "Seniors 2023 Seminar and Luncheon," you don't have to be a senior to attend, according to Alan Bernstein, communications director for the Southwest Management District. The event is focused on seniors, who are often considered easier targets by criminals, but it's open to any member of the community.
If you're looking out for a senior in your life--or just want some safety tips for yourself--you can attend from 10 AM to 12:30 PM at the Chinese Community Center on 9800 Town Park Dr. The event also includes the meeting of the Chinatown Public Safety subcommittee of the Southwest Management District, which starts at 11:30 AM.
To attend the seminar, RSVP to atrinh@haweshill.com.
